Study: Obese Kids Are Absent More
(Associated Press, 8/10/07)
Andrew B. Geier and researchers at Penn and Temple
University assessed whether 1,069 fourth to sixth graders in
nine Philadelphia schools were underweight, normal weight,
overweight or obese. The investigators found that obese
children were typically absent from school more often than
their thinner counterparts and that being obese is a strong
predictor of absenteeism. These findings suggest that
childhood obesity tends to set an individual up for
long-term problems beyond the obvious health issues.
