Soda May
Increase Female Diabetes Risk
(Orlando, FL, Associated Press, 6/8/04)
Dr. Matthias B. Schulze of the Harvard School of Public
Health, and team, analyzed data gathered from 91,000 adult
women over an eight-year period as part of the Nurses Health
Study at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. The
scientists report that consuming more than one sugar-sweetened
drink daily was associated with an increased risk of gaining
weight and developing type 2 diabetes. Mike Jacobsen of
the Center for Science in the Public Interest applauded the
findings as evidence in support of restricting soft drink
consumption in schools, but the National Soft Drink
Association called the study "unconvincing and inconclusive. |
