Obesity
Raises Risk for 9 Cancer Types
(Washington, AP, 8/23/04)
Evidence mounts that being overweight is associated with at
least 9 types of cancer, including malignancies of the colon,
breast, uterus, kidney, esophagus, pancreas, gallbladder,
liver and upper stomach. In addition to being implicated in
causing cancer, extra body mass makes it harder to find tumors
early and to facilitate appropriate life-prolonging
treatments. Researchers are currently trying to understand how
fat cells might fuel cancer growth. While more studies are
needed to clearly define a causal relationship between excess
weight and cancer, it makes sense to take a proactive approach
and maintain an appropriate weight through exercise, proper
diet and supplementation |
