Metabolic
Syndrome on the Rise in U.S. Adults
(NY, Reuters Health, 10/8/04)
Dr. Earl S. Ford and associates at the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, Atlanta, studied 6,436 adult
participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey (NHANES) III (1988-1994) plus 1677 from NHANES 1999 to
2000. The investigators concluded that the incidence of
metabolic syndrome is rising significantly among Americans and
may precipitate increased diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The researchers recommend instituting “comprehensive
approaches" to improve nutrition and physical activity among
those likely to be affected.
