Metabolic Syndrome Common in Teens

Dr. Nader Rifai of Children's Hospital in Boston, and team, reviewed data collected between 1988 and 1994 on about 2000 youngsters, 12 to 19 years old, who participants in the Third National Health and Nutritional Survey. The researchers found that nearly a third of overweight teenagers had metabolic syndrome, as identified by exhibiting at least three of the following five factors: “high triglycerides, low levels of HDL "good " cholesterol, high blood sugar levels, a big waist circumference and high blood pressure.”
