Metabolic
Syndrome Players Deadly When Combined
(HealthDayNews, 12/16/03)
John Ninomiya of the University of California at San Diego
and associates examined the health implications of the 5
symptoms of metabolic syndrome--hypertension, elevated
triglycerides, low HDL ("good" cholesterol), insulin
resistance and abdominal obesity. The scientists used data
collected between 1988 and 1994 from 10,357 American adult
participants in the Third National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey. The investigators found that each of the
first 4 characteristics occurring alone raised the risk for
vascular disease, but that having various combinations of the
5 further magnified the risk |
