High Calorie
Intake Tied to Prostate Cancer
(NY, Reuters Health, 3/6/03)
Lillian J. Hsieh of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore,
MD, and associates, studied 444 men. Forty-six of the
participants had been previously diagnosed with prostate
cancer and 22 developed the disease during the course of the
study. The researchers found that the men with the highest
calorie intake (about 2,600 calories daily) had nearly 4 times
the risk of developing prostate cancer as those reporting the
lowest calorie intake. The investigators speculate that high
calorie intake may increase the levels of certain hormones
that support the growth of malignancies. |
