Night-eating
Syndrome: Much More than Midnight Snacks
(HealthScoutNews, 7/2/02)
People with Night-Eating Syndrome, also known as Nocturnal
Sleep-Related Eating Disorder, experience episodes of
sleep-disruption during which they over-eat while in a
trance-like state. While research on this phenomenon is
scarce, studies have linked it to sleep apnea; atypical
melatonin and cortisol levels; and abnormal levels of
stress-regulating hormones. Night- eaters may gain relief by
exercising regularly; following a nighttime routine; losing
weight; and avoiding caffeine, sedatives and alcohol before
bedtime. Lea Montgomery, an instructor at Texas Christian
University's Harris School of Nursing in Fort Worth, advocates
educating doctors and the public on this serious condition. |
